Gordon Barnett – Artist Statement
I am first a visual artist, a sculptor, a miniaturist… a jeweler. I am fascinated with mechanique & when I wanted a production line, I impulsively experimented with carving a bell. That piqued my curiosity about resonance & the improbable physics of making bells.
The wax in which I carve is very non-resonant, so I have little essential control over how the cast objects might sound. Thus I must follow the idea of a bell intuitively toward its ultimate musical resonance. For 35 years now the bells & I continue teach/learning to share our experience… inviting all of us to a more fulsomely creative life.
More than 50 years of sculpting wax has honed the skill required to realize complex detail with a passion I know to be remarkable.
