SUMMARY:Fourth Annual Member Show
DESCRIPTION:Vashon Center for the Arts will host the Fourth Annual VIVA Member Show\, June 4th – 27th. \nVashon Island Visual Arts (VIVA) opens its annual member show at Vashon Center for the Arts (VCA) on June 4 with a reception starting at 4 pm and side by side with the Biennial Student Show opening the same day with an artist reception from 2pm to 4pm. VIVA artists number 115 in this\, the biggest membership show ever\, and works range from two dimensional painting and photography in virtually all mediums to three dimensional jewelry\, woodworking\, ceramics\, collage and more. \nAnd this headline “Small Island\, Big Art”\, graciously on loan from Lynann Politte for whom it is her tagline for the VCA Gallery\, really says it all! The VIVA show is not only one of the biggest exhibits of the year in terms of participating artists but will allow for the first time in over a year the most visitors in the gallery. The VIVA artists are ready\, having spent the COVID year immersing themselves in work\, new directions and new designs. Lynann Politte observed that “All through the pandemic I’ve witnessed artists continue to make great art\, expressing a spectrum of emotions and experiences of the year-long shut down. The art in the VIVA show reflects this diversity in expression and medium. And\, amazingly\, all of these artists live here with us on this small island”. \nEach member artist was encouraged to submit one or more pieces within certain guidelines to the show juried by VIVA Board members Annette Messitt and Lin Holley. Asked his thoughts on the exhibited works\, VIVA President Brian Fisher commented “Such diverse and intriguing work from Vashon’s visual artists! As an artist and appreciator of the interpreted visual\, I am amazed by the scope and nuance reflected in this show. I am also motivated to wonder- how? I think\, how was that texture created before it was shaped into that mug? Was the photographer moving or the subject in this photo? What kind of a brush or was it a tool that makes such a scalloped mark? We each are hardwired to think and make in a unique way and this show proves the fact.” \nBut the most succinct description of the exhibit and exhibitors come from curator/jurors Annette Messitt and Lin Holley. Drafted to do the heavy lifting that such a large show embodies\, the two organizers have viewed every piece of art submitted and essentially loved them all\, whether room on the walls was sufficient or not. They were forced to make hard decisions in many cases\, especially 2D works\, to select only one out of two or three equally amazing images due to space constraints. Reflecting on that process\, Annett Messitt said “The VIVA Members Show illustrates that while many things have been on hold during the pandemic\, creativity was alive and well among Vashon visual artists. Visitors will recognize works from their favorite on-island artists and enjoy seeing both 2D and 3D work from new members that are equally as exciting. The show is a perfect way to usher in a post-pandemic era that we believe will be defined by hope and creativity.” For a full list of exhibiting artists\, selected photographs\, show hours and other details\, go to https://vivartists.com/. \nSo what do these comments tell you? Probably what you have known and experienced year after year on Vashon but it may have taken a pandemic to remind us – we live in a rich\, artistically diverse community that is\, statistically\, simply chock full of exceptional artists. And this show gives you the opportunity to see a huge number of them in one place\, at one time and\, for some of them\, the first time. VIVA is particularly happy to be sharing the walls with the Biennial Student show as VIVA is dedicated to providing scholarships and guidance to emerging high school artists by funding $2000.00 or more in scholarships each year. \nOn Friday\, June 4 and throughout the show\, VCA will maintain COVID protocols as outlined by VCA and which include the “Meet the Artist” reception spread out over four hours with artists’ arrivals evenly spaced out during that period\, social distancing\, signing in\, readily available hand sanitizers and mandatory masks. The Biennial Student Show will maintain the same safeguards during its 2pm to 4pm reception. The exhibits run through June 27th. We are indeed a Small Island with Big Art!

SUMMARY:!Attention! Artists at Work - Call for Applications
DESCRIPTION:Artists at Work Project No. 1 – A Mural by Island Artists\nApplication Deadline: July 17\, 2020\nSummary\n!Attention! Arts at Work is a jobs program for public art. The first project of this jobs program is a mural by Island artists that will be installed at Open Space for Arts and Community.\nThe mural will consist of 60 panels each 32” square. Local artists will create individual works on the panels\, forming a collage of Island art. Artists may create 2- or 3-dimensional works of art on the panels. Open Space is the commissioning organization. This call is a request for qualifications that asks for examples of an artist’s recent or relevant work. Previous experience with murals and public art is not necessary. \nArtistic theme: Backyard Universe \nVisual theme: Artists will incorporate a good dose of Pyrrole Red. \nArt Goals and Criteria \nThe goals of the mural are to provide income for Island artists with financial need and create a public testament to the 2020 COVID-19 Pandemic\, the economic and cultural crisis\, and the future beyond it. The mural will remain in place for at least three years. \nArtist Eligibility \nArtists must live on Vashon Island and must have financial need\, such as the loss of a day job or reduction in hours\, loss of traditional opportunities for sales\, commissions\, and/or artistic fees or loss of a job by a partner or spouse within their household. \nOpen Space for Arts & Community is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to equal opportunity without regard to age\, race\, religion\, color\, national origin\, sex\, gender\, sexual orientation\, citizenship\, disability\, pregnancy\, maternity\, marriage\, civil partnership\, citizenship\, disability\, or any other basis of discrimination prohibited by applicable law. \nArt Location \nThe mural will be located at Open Space on the main building\, 18870 103rd Avenue SW\, Vashon. The mural will be affixed to the north wall of the Open Space facility east of the front doors between the two red bay doors. The 60 panels will be hung on a steel mounting structure fabricated for the mural. \nEach year thousands of people attend art and community events at Open Space. The mural will beautify the wall east of the main entrance and be a focal point of the building. The mural fronts the parking lot that often fills beyond capacity during events. During slower times\, families bike or walk past the front of the building on their way to the Tool Library or the green space and trails south of the building. The site of the mural is always open to the public. Security cameras and public use minimize vandalism risks. \nThe mural will combine 60 works of art into one piece of collaborative art. \nBudget and Materials \nArtists will be paid $500 for 1 panel and $350 for a maximum of two (2) panels \nCommission structure: 1 panel -$500 \, 2 panels – $850 \nOpen Space will provide the support panel(s) upon which the art will be created and 6 or fewer 4-ounce containers of Nova Paints\, which are specially formulated for murals. Artists will be responsible for the cost of additional Nova Paints. Artists are responsible for all other material costs. Because this is an exterior mural that will have to withstand years of rain\, wind\, sun and other harsh weather\, it is REQUIRED that all painters use Nova Paints exclusively. \nArtists may propose panels in other media\, 2D or 3D. These should be weatherproof and able to withstand years of the elements outdoors. Artists who propose media other than Nova Paints should submit a thorough proposal detailing their media\, approach\, and plans to make their work weatherproof. \nOpen Space will provide the support\, one (1) or two (2) 32” square MDO panels per artist’s proposal primed front and back with a water-based primer with mounting holes in each corner. The panel edges will be filled as needed and sealed. Open Space will seal the completed artwork with Nova Color #216 Exterior Varnish (satin)\, a clear topcoat for exterior use. Open Space will provide artists with a topcoat sample so that they may test the sealant on their work. \nApplication Requirements \nArtists should submit the following information for consideration . \n● 8 digital images (jpg format with image size set to 300 dpi\, 4” x 6” image size\, approximately). Please use the following format for naming digital files: Artist name-Artwork Title-Length x Height (Depth in case of sculpture)-Year. For example\, J.M.W. Turner-Dawn after the Wreck-14×10-1841. \n● An annotated list of images with title\, media\, size\, date\, and other relevant information \n● A short statement of interest and a brief description of financial need (100 to 300 words) \n● a resume or short biography \nPlease email applications to info@openspacevashon.com . Early submissions are encouraged. \nPlease email submissions to info@openspacevashon.com . No mailed submissions will be accepted. \nSelection Process and Criteria \nThe selection panel will include members of Open Space and VIVA\, professional artists\, and community representatives. Selection criteria include artistic excellence and financial need. \nProject Timeline \nSubmission deadline: July 17 \nPanel review: July 17 to July 23 \nArtist notification: July 24 \nPanel pick up and contract signing: July 25 and 26 \nCompleted artwork due; payment to artists: September 4 \nCuration and installation: September 5 to September 25 \nUnveiling and opening: October 2 \nOrganizations Overseeing the Mural Project \nOpen Space for Arts and Community \nVashon Island Visual Artists (VIVA)

SUMMARY:Collograph
DESCRIPTION:Oct. 26-27  collograph—making a printing plate as you would a collage.  Glue textures onto a plexiglass plate using acrylic medium.  When the plate is dry you can wipe ink into the plate and wipe it off again so it is held in the lowest parts of the plate.  When you run this through the press you get an image with beautiful rich textures.  Roll ink over the high points of the plate to create even more color and texture. \n If there is enough interest it would be fun to do a class that just explored printing the collograph.  Once you have a plate you can print it many different ways. \nDetails:  classes run from 10:00 to 4:00.  The cost is $195 for the two days plus $25 material fees.  The fees include everything except extra paper which can be purchaced at cost. \nThe classes are located at the Beall greenhouses at 18531 Beall Rd SW  Vashon. \n If you have any questions let me know  “mailto:valeriewillson@comcast.net”valeriewillson@comcast.net or 206-463-5067.

SUMMARY:Intermediate Monoprint
DESCRIPTION:     \nIntermediate Monoprint – learning more techniques with monoprint.  Build on techniques you already know—and continue an understanding of inks and color.  We will focus on registration—printing over an image you already have to add to it and make it richer.  And we will explore viscosity—putting an oily ink down and rolling over it with a stiffer ink so the oily ink rejects the stiff ink and you get several colors side by side.  We will also explore more techniques for applying ink to a plate.  You will begin to see how the techniques can be interchanged for endless possibilities.  \n Details:  classes run from 10:00 to 4:00.

SUMMARY:Beginning Monoprint
DESCRIPTION:Sept 21-22  beginning monoprint—no experience necessary\, but experienced artists will enjoy it as well.  Use the etching press to create a one of a kind image.  Using oil based inks\, create images on a plexi glass plate using brushies\, stencils\, stamps\, natural materrials\, fabric textures\, and whatever you can think of.  This is a fun free form process—you will make a print by lunch time.  In this class you will also learn to use the press and understand how the studio works.  Great fun! \n I am very excited about these classes.  If you have any questions let me know  HYPERLINK “mailto:valeriewillson@comcast.net”valeriewillson@comcast.net or 206-463-5067.  All my best\, Valerie

DESCRIPTION:VIVA photographers\, please join us to show and discuss your photographs.  We are meeting at Gather Vashon.  The format will be akin to a portfolio review.  Each photographer will present their work and participate in a roundtable discussion.  The idea is to be able to show your work\, add commentary\, and get feedback from your fellow Vashon photographers.  This is NOT a competition!  This is not a juried event.  This is friends gathering to see each other’s work and offer comments\, support and encouragement. \nAll that is required is finished photographs.  Yes\, real\, paper photographs\, those 20th Century things we all remember!  Please limit your submission to 10-12 photos max.  Be selective\, bring your best.  The idea is to show your best and get feedback from fellow photographers and friends. \nFood and beverages are not provided\, so if anyone wants to bring some that would be great. \n
