Discovering new mediums and new ways of working with them artistically is a never ending pursuit. I\u2019ve enjoyed delving into a wide variety of visual arts.<\/p>\n<p>My most recent endeavor is assemblage. I enjoy the complexity of attaching found objects to wood and metal, forming unusual patterns and statements.<\/p>\n<p>I continue to create mixed media sculpture using copper, Apoxie Sculpt clay, wood and other miscellaneous wires, beads, driftwood and found objects to create pieces that explore emotion and movement. I create textures and patinas with copper as a way of adding to the visual image of the emotion.<\/p>\n<p>Before retiring, I worked as an Environmental Graphic Designer and Advertising Art Director after graduating from ETSU with a double major in Industrial Design and Commercial Art and later did graduate work in ceramics and welded metal sculpture. My design experience has given me the visual and technical foundation to pursue many artistic interests. Many artists, of course, say this and it is true enough but as an elder it is especially significant. I have always drawn; on napkins and bits of paper here and there, as a woman who was raising children might. I designed their clothes and sewed them up in our basement as they slept. A quiet and humble satisfaction. My parents' experience of the depression made an indelible impression and early on felt I ought to be able to make what I need. They were both artists but my mother\u2019s love of natural beauty was a true gift.<\/p>\n<p>Some years ago, I was introduced to pottery and my hands fell in love. I had given them a new medium to explore and the whole of me was simply delighted. My long diary poured out as I shaped and drew women, animals, emotions; stories! My simple illustrations had a new canvas.<\/p>\n<p>I made cups and bowls, figures, vases and busts of people I knew; lives I\u2019ve lived. I painted my wee life on all these vessels as a way to express all myself; my love and devotions, my outrage and frustration. All of it! Because why not? Even the simplest moment has its own atmosphere \u2013 its own story. When I meet a person, walk into a room, or even pick up an orange, I get a certain feeling. There's an essence that belongs to just that moment. I get to be with that feeling while I attempt to translate it into the poetry of paint.<\/p>\n<p>This year I had the opportunity to paint and show my work in New York City at the famous Italian restaurant Lattanzi's Cucina Italiana. After witnessing wonders while traveling, I see beauty at home with new eyes. Painting gives me a great excuse to stop time for a little while and explore the splendor around me. She also loves using real ferns, leaves, cedar and red huckleberry branches collected from the woods around her home on Vashon Island, gluing them onto the glass and sandblasting over them. This technique creates her \u201cForest Shadows\u201d pieces with delicate silhouettes of the leaves on a frosted background.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"margin: 0px;font-size: 16px;line-height: normal;color: #000000\">The Holiday Studio Tour is an invitation to see where and how an artist creates their work! It adds a depth of understanding and appreciation of the piece. Silvija\u2019s studio is divided in two \u2013 the \u201cclean side\u201d where she displays her glass and the \u201cdirty side\u201d where she does the sandblasting. They primarily source yarns that follow the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS), or recycled, repurposed fibers, at times sourcing directly from the ranch\/mill. Barbara Benedetti Newton has been a full-time artist since 1992. She returned to the island in 2022 and Dockton Art Studio was created within the \u201cwalking-distance loop\u201d of many other Dockton community studios.<\/p>\n<p>Landscape scenes, both real and imagined, are Barbara\u2019s favorite subject for pastel which has been her primary medium for more than twenty years. She also works in oil, acrylic, and most recently, gouache. Her paintings express her love of color, mark making, and relationships between positive and negative shapes.
