Lyle Harris – Artist Statement

“I have enjoyed a lifelong fascination with wood working. At one level, wood is one of our few renewable resources suitable for creating buildings, boats, bridges, fences, containers, furniture, sculpture, paper, and art. I am constantly in awe of the variety in color, density, grain pattern, sound, and texture. My work shop is my sanctuary. The hours I spend in this space are a creative meditation far removed from the frantic pace of modern living.

“In recent years, my focus has included wood turning, furniture and boxes. The variety of wood found on Vashon Island include Madrone, Black Walnut, Black Locust, Holly, Douglas Fir, Maple, Birch Plum, Cedar, and many other. I work with all of them. “
