Kathryn Perkins – Artist Statement
Vashon Knitwear Studio is a small-batch knitwear studio creating handmade accessories designed on Vashon Island and inspired by coastal living, real people, and real weather.
I’m Kathryn Perkins—though many on Vashon know me as Kitty—a third-generation Islander raised in the heart of Burton. My family’s roots run deep here: my grandparents lived in what was once the Hinge Gallery, and Pandora’s Box was my grandfather’s autobody shop. Vashon has always been part of my story.
Like many small-town kids, I left as soon as I could. At 18, I headed off to college and eventually built a career in software technology. Years later, however—like a salmon swimming upstream—the island called me home.
After returning to Vashon, I reconnected with my childhood friend Barbara DiPrete Waterbury, and together we launched Vashon Island Hats in 2024, bonding over shared loves of knitting, gardening, and travel. As the business grew, our creative paths naturally evolved in different directions. Barbara now continues her work as Vashon Island Hats, and I’m grateful we remain each other’s biggest supporters.
Looking ahead, I’m excited to grow Vashon Knitwear Studio with new collections featuring exclusive custom-dyed merino and alpaca yarns. I look forward to sharing more about the farms, dyers, and Pacific Northwest–inspired colors behind each piece. I’ll be expanding studio offerings with knitting activities, classes, and a refreshed Etsy shop.
Thank you for being here and for supporting ethical fibers and hand-knit, island-made work. I’m so glad you’re part of this next chapter.
