8. Frog Holler Studios

11325 SW COVE RD

Nancy Putney - watercolor, graphite, ink; Claire Putney - mixed media drawing & printmaking, handmade books, fiber arts

Frog Holler Studios is a family artist collective that sits adjacent to the wetlands of the Fisher Pond Preserve. In early spring, the mating calls of frogs in the neighboring wetlands send a symphonic echo through the surrounding forest. This magical place inspires our work, finding form in watercolor paintings, drawings, printmaking, handmade books and paper, and fiber arts.

During this year’s Spring VIVA Tour, we present work by Nancy and Claire Putney. Trained as a graphic designer and calligrapher, Nancy Putney is known for her realistic, montage-style illustrations and mural art. Working primarily in watercolor, graphite, and ink, she centers her creativity around nature and what she finds in the beauty of outdoor environments, including natural landscapes, flora and fauna, and architectural structures.

Claire Putney is an interdisciplinary artist, arts educator, and craftsperson who has a background in printmaking, darkroom photography, and fiber art. With an affinity to texture and pattern, her drawings and prints gather momentum in the layering of lines and shapes from maps, charts, and diagrams. Much of Claire’s work is informed by relics, materials, and imagery that she collects from specific geographic locations to describe the histories of a place.

Lynanne Raven - Printmaker

I love the creative process and the challenge of researching and trying something new.

I began my artistic career as a fabric designer graduating with a degree in Textile Design.

As my life evolved so did my art. I've journeyed into woodworking, creating mirrors influenced by traditional Hawaiian quilts and 19th-century Arts & Crafts tiles. This is often a single design repeated to create a beautiful and functional piece of art.

I am now enjoying the exploration of drypoint printing by which an image is incised in a plate with a sharp pointed needle.

Whether it's the petals of a flower, the feathers of a bird or the wings of a honeybee, this medium gives me the opportunity to see and appreciate the amazing detail resplendent in nature.

12. Glass Heart Sandblasted Glass

15631 Westside Hwy SW

Googlemap

Inspired by the natural beauty around her Vashon Island home, Silvija Paza has been sandblasting heron, frog and salmon designs onto vases, bowls, beer and coffee mugs since 1985. She also sandblasts glass using real leaves, ferns, cedar and hemlock to create her "Forest Shadows" pieces with delicate silhouettes of the leaves on a frosted background.

With gifts for Mother's Day in mind, she's sandblasted small "windowsill" vases to put a tiny bouquet in and tea sets with a teapot and two cups. Just add mom's favorite tea blend and have a tea party! Salad bowls and pitchers are beautiful and useful gifts for mom, too.

The tour is a chance to visit Silvija's studio where she creates the work. It's divided in two- the "clean side" where she displays her glass and the "dirty side" where she does the sandblasting.

The studio is right next to the Old Colvos Store with the gas pump out front, which is her home and a King County historic landmark on the Westside Highway. Her studio is open by appointment year-round. Just text/call 206 567-4228 or email glassheartvashon@gmail.com if you'd like to stop by.

You can also find her work at the Swiftwater Gallery in lovely downtown Vashon.

Stephanie Marotta, Pottery
Tory Grove, Pottery
Cecilia Kane - Pottery

S.Marotta Pottery: S.Marotta Pottery is ‘Unique Pottery to Enjoy Every Day.’ Originally from Pennsylvania, Stephanie Marotta was influenced by the Arts & Crafts movement, especially pottery. Inspired by the joy of cooking and sharing meals with her family, much of her work is focused on food preparation and serving. Currently working in various stonewares.

Fueled by her passion for the craft and her relocation to art-friendly Vashon Island, Stephanie has had the opportunity to delve into her craft in earnest. Her focus is to create the finished look of a reduction fired piece using an electric kiln. Her goal is to create functional pottery that is affordable and comfortable to use on a daily basis. All S.Marotta Pottery pieces are microwave and dishwasher safe.

Tory MaDe iT: Tory Grove has been studying abstract painting since 1988. She studied at The Brentwood Art Center in Brentwood, CA, UCLA, Santa Ynez, CA, Ventura CA., Cornwall, UK and Vashon Island, WA under Stephanie Marotta.

In 2015 Tory fell in love with the texture of clay between her fingers and fused her passion for abstract painting with her newfound fervor for hand building. Her pottery process requires her to fire her pieces multiple times so she can get the color and textures she is seeking. Every piece is one of a kind.

Cecilia Kane: Cecilia Kane is new to the pottery scene! Her nature-inspired tree vases are truly unique. Each piece is sculpted and carved creating one-of-a-kind works of art that are ready to hold your summer cuttings!

Painting Vashon’s beaches and trails for over 25 years, I aim to capture the raw beauty that the island has to offer. For this Spring 2025 Studio Tour, I'm excited to exhibit my Vashon landscape paintings and prints, watercolor and mixed media, that show off the glorious island I now call home. I often paint along Vashon trails and its many beaches, looking for the colors, textures and shapes that describe the uniqueness of the island.

My artwork will be displayed in an outdoor covered area at Shawnee Hill Farm, alongside sun-lit apple trees, grape vines, and flourishing gardens, all adjacent to the farm’s wine and cider production.

There will also be a table with art materials for children and adults wanting to be creative. I hope to see you there!

Working studio and gallery featuring contemporary leather sculptures and fine leather fashion accessories. Leather is my main medium - it tells me a story, and I bring it out.

My new studio is the old Burton Post Office, where I'm creating leather-based sculpture and assemblage, as well as other leather goods based on decades working in the medium.      A passion for history and the cowboy period in the American West initially drew me to the techniques and aesthetics that are the foundation of my work. My commercial designs have been used in fashion, advertising, television and film; other creations are in private collections and museums.    This new body of work is a true departure for me and a real joy...no boundaries and 35 years of technique I can run with. I'm having a blast with these sculptures. And they seem to appeal to the hearts and sense of humor of those who stop by to see them.

23. The Old Dockton Press

SW 265th and 99th Ave SW

Googlemap

Annette Messitt, printmaker

The ART: The Old Dockton Press studio features traditional linocut and block prints, including reductive linocuts. Linoleum block printing is similar to woodblock in that carving a linoleum block is a subtractive process: the cut away areas do not print. Reductive linocutting--or the suicide method--uses one single block. The highlights are carved out first and the block is rolled with ink and printed using a press on every sheet of paper in the edition. Then the block is carved further, it is rolled with ink, and the sheets are run through the press again. In the end, the linoleum is almost completely carved away.

The STUDIO: You’ll find framed originals on the studio walls and unframed originals to browse. You will also find hand printed cards and tags, fine art prints of original work, as well as tile coasters and art-adorned canvas bags. There is something for everyone and at every price range.

I’ll have some cozy chairs and maybe even an outdoor fire. You can chat with the artist. You can chat with your neighbors. Or you can just sit and eat cookies. Really. I mean it.

Don’t forget to bring some quarters so you can partake in Vashon’s only ART VENDING MACHINE. You should stop by. It's only a dollar. I can make change. When is the last time that four little quarters bought you something that brings you JOY. I’ll bet it’s been too long.

Oil paintings of Vashon Island: the ferries, views of the shore, Madrona trees, the lighthouse, familiar scenes, Puget Sound and the Pacific Northwest. Gretchen Hancock is a painter who works primarily in oils. She is attracted to the way light transforms the ordinary into something extraordinary and turns the everyday into something dramatic.

Gretchen studied at the University of Nebraska where she graduated with a BFA and majored in ceramics. She has since painted in watercolors, pastel and acrylics as well as oils. She has taught at the community college level, and has exhibited and won awards in local and national shows.

26040 99th Ave SW

Googlemap

Cory Winn, pottery - Chloe Almeda, pottery

Pottery by Cory Winn and her daughter, Chloe Almeda. Their pieces, which include tiles, plates, bowls, and vases, are hand built and decorated in intricate designs, using wax resist and a wide variety of glazes.

For over 25-years, Cory has been experimenting with clay and glazes, making bowls, vases, and tiles, and decorating them with designs inspired by the colors, shapes, plants, and creatures found in the natural world.

From a young age, Chloe watched as Cory hand built and decorated her pieces with scenes of vibrant nasturtiums, inquisitive owls, chatty birds on small branches, textured leaves and flowers, and very cheery dancing mice.

While Chloe has been experimenting with clay since she was about 10-years-old, she didn’t start consistently creating things like wall vases, small dishes, tiles, and bowls, until she was in her late twenties.

Since then, Chloe has been pulling inspiration for her designs from old textile patterns, Greek mythology, folklore, natural textures, and earthy, rich, and vibrant colors, and well-loved home interiors, to name a few.

Cheryl Muonio - mixed-media artist
Hope Black - mixed-media artist

Cheryl Muonio and Hope Black are mixed-media artists living on Vashon Island. Together they will exhibit an exploration of texture, transformation, and the beauty of nature. Located facing Tramp Harbor, stop by Mini Harbor Studio to enjoy views of both the water and the art, share some conversation, and peruse the items we have for sale – including original works and high-quality giclée prints.

Cheryl is self-taught and paints intuitively. She loves to lose track of time creating abstract acrylic paintings and three-dimensional sculptural works using mixed media. Light and shadows play across the textured surfaces of both paintings and sculptures, allowing for a slightly transformed scene from every viewing angle.

MiniHarbor.studio

Hope is a mixed media artist and photographer who transforms discarded materials from natural settings into nature-inspired scenes. Using collage techniques, acrylic paint, and toner-transferred photographs, she builds rich textures that blend the organic with the artificial. Her abstract and impressionistic landscapes create an ironic and striking commentary on the need for environmental conservation—and society’s tendency to overlook it.

Whimsically Odd Works
Assemblages, Paintings, Sculptures, Children's Books, Cards and stuff.

I have always been drawn to the whimsical and weird side of things. From discovering Mad magazine, and George Pal Puppetoons as a kid to later falling in love with the world of independent animation, Monty Python’s, Mummenschanz, graphic novels, and the work of Shel Silverstein, Saul Steinberg, Alexander Calder, and Red Grooms (to name just a few). My work has always had a similar irreverent spirit.

Throughout my 45 years in the Arts, I have worn a lot of hats. I have been an animation director/creative director and co-owner at Olive Jar Studios in Boston, where we produced TV commercials, music videos, and station IDs for companies like MTV, Nickelodeon, and ABC-TV, along with short films that played in international film festivals. Later, I was a director at Will Vinton Studios in Portland, directing episodes of “The PJs”, an animated TV series created by Eddie Murphy. I’ve been a creator and performer of giant puppets and puppet shows with my ex-company Zambini Brothers. More recently, I was the director of The Conscious Cartoons International Animation Festival. In between some of this, I designed and directed many animated pieces for Committee for Children as well as my own short, animated films.

I left that all behind 5 years ago and now spend much of my time concocting whimsically odd art and children's books in my home studio. I have a lot of fun.

Suzanna Leigh, Watercolor Paintings; Anne Moses, acrylic; Vera Moses, pottery

Flowers that won't fade and whimsical pottery will greet you at the Lavender Cat Studio.

Flowers are a burst of joy to express our love for each other, to comfort grieving loved ones, to honor your mother or a friend, or to wish a person well in a new venture. There is a whole language of symbolism around flowers: Lilies at Easter for transformation, red roses to say "I love you passionately". Aside from flowers' assigned meanings, they always cheer our hearts and make us feel loved.

Suzanna Leigh expresses her joy in watercolor paintings and monoprints of flowers, inspired by the bouquets her beloved brought home from the market. "They were so beautiful, they were begging me to paint their portrait," she says.

Anne Moses paints luscious exuberant bouquets in acrylic.

Vera Moses' pots with faces will make you smile, and her little vases are perfect for that gift of fresh flowers you wanted to honor your mother with.

Kassana Holden - Acrylic Painting, Drawing and Mixed Media

There is a residual beauty to things that are neglected and begin to fade, and I’m drawn to the discovery of what moves into the spaces left behind. I often find myself drawn to the transformative nature of objects and subjects, archetypal forms and how we experience things over time.

In the studio, I enter into a kind of internal inquiry, where curiosity takes precedence over intellect, and I allow that to lead the process in both my drawing and painting.

I am currently offering 1 and 2 day workshops in Somatic Drawing this Spring and Summer.

Pam Ingalls, oil paintings

I love painting portraits. When a painting on my easel looks back at me I feel a thrill - and a profound connection. Each May I hold a portrait exhibit on Vashon. This year’s exhibit is called: “FACING ISLAND ANCHORS” - oil portraits celebrating the individuals behind Vashon’s beloved businesses.

Running an island business is a labor of love. Everyone benefits from these dedicated entrepreneurs without knowing their faces or stories. What would our community be without them? I want to honor their contributions to island life by painting them.

Besides the portrait collection, you will find prints and cards of still lifes, interiors, landscapes and Vashon scenes offered in Dig Deep Gardens’ beautiful greenhouse gallery.

I hope my work inspires people to look twice at the everyday beauty around them...and to find their own way to express that.

Come explore both the gardens and art!

Bio
Raised in Spokane, Washington, Pam Ingalls studied art at the Accademia Di Belle Arti in Florence, Italy and earned an art degree from the art department that her father began at Gonzaga University in Spokane, WA. She later refined her technique under Russian Impressionist Ron Lukas' mentorship.

Her award-winning work has been exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the United States, Europe, and Africa, appearing in over 125 national and international juried exhibitions. American Women Artists has honored her as a Master Painter. Pam’s paintings may be universal in scope, but each one is a personal statement from her heart.
