Laurie Lessen Reiche – Artist Statement
Having been a poet and prose writer for years, my aesthetic process when turned to the visual arts, is to find a form that synthesizes both verbal as well as symbolic self-expression. It is because of my literary roots that the imagery so often emerging through the various genres I work in, collage, photography, pastel, and acrylics, leans heavily toward the reflective.
One of the first questions I ask myself when writing or painting or making a collage is, how can art galvanize the human spirit? Can I, to one degree or another, express the inner, psychological ontology of life, and can I discover ways to highlight the map that nature holds to help me out of my confusion. These are questions I know will never be fully answered but they will keep me forever making art.
