Barbara Benedetti Newton – Artist Statement

My paintings express my love of color, mark making, and the relationships between values and shapes. Together, I hope to create an interesting impression of a place, real or imagined. I follow my natural instincts to give the viewer enough information to draw them in and help them make the scene and the story of the place their own.

Bio

I was born and raised in Washington state and attended the Art Institute of Seattle when it was known as Burnley School of Professional Art. In 1965 I began my art career as a fashion illustrator for a major Seattle retailer (The Bon Marché). Many years later after several life-changing events, I began making art again with colored pencils and co-authored Colored Pencil Solution Book, published in 2000. After a decade of creating colored pencil still life work, pastel became my primary medium for impressionistic landscapes. In 2013 I authored the book Art Answers: Pastel Drawing. Though I continue to work in pastel, my current work is sometimes oil or acrylic.

A long-time member of international, national, and local art organizations, I fill various volunteer roles as time permits. I am represented by Attic Gallery, Camas, WA, American Art Company, Tacoma, WA, and Scott Milo Gallery, Anacortes, and have been online with Daily Paintworks since 2011.
