Elizabeth Cromwell – Artist Statement
“I am a mixed media artist working primarily in figurative sculpture and assemblage, often at a miniature scale. My work blends animal forms, narrative, and found materials to create small, story-driven objects that live between art and artifact. I draw inspiration from folklore, fairy tales, natural history, and animist traditions—filtered through a background in art and biology.
“Animals and hybrid figures are central to my practice. I’m fascinated by the ways people have understood animals as observers, messengers, and household presences, and how those ideas quietly endure in contemporary life.
“I use stone clay, polymer clay, papier-mâché, wire, textiles, paper, acrylic paint, and vintage or everyday ephemera to build sculptures that also function as narrative objects. Whether a piece reads as a guardian, a specimen, or a character from an unnamed story, my goal is to invite curiosity, delight, familiarity, and a sense of magic.”
