Jessi Lapano – Artist Statement
Jessi is a potter living in the PNW for the past 9 years. Her background as an architect draws her to design clean, symmetrical forms. She mixes her interest in fragrances and candlemaking with her love of clay to create oil infused terracotta that visually and aromatically enhance a space.
She has a particular passion for saggar pottery, which utilizes various organic and combustible materials in the clay finishing process. She uses a mix of seaweeds, shells, and minerals found here on Vashon to color her work. The combustion of these elements produce beautiful reactions that become integral to the surface of the clay and create unique, earthy results with each firing. You can often find her foraging along the shoreline of KVI, searching for her favorite kelps to fire her pottery.
