Rose Belknap’s Studio is in Historical Dockton at 10039 1/2 SW Dock Street. Rose uses color, refractive light and shapes to tell stories with her oil paintings. Her current work focuses on nature’s healing and uplifting beauty. The inherent glow of oil paint enlivens her work and gives it an extra luminosity.
Yulia Ivashchenko will be sharing Rose’s studio at 10039 1/2 SW Dock Street , for the VIVA Holiday Tour. Yulia has been creating wool felted clothing from head to toe. She creates beautiful and fanciful hats, scarves, cardigans, huggable pillows and even slippers and shoes all from wool felt.

Bio
I was born and raised in Washington state and attended the Art Institute of Seattle when it was known as Burnley School of Professional Art. In 1965 I began my art career as a fashion illustrator for a major Seattle retailer, The Bon Marché. Then, a working farm on Vashon, raising two children, and a flock of sheep resulted in a 20-year sabbatical from art. In 1992 I began making art again and eventually pastel became my primary medium though I currently work also in oil or acrylic. We returned to the island in 2022 and Dockton Art Studio was created within the walking-distance “loop” of many other Dockton community studios. I hope you’ll visit us!

Pottery by Cory Winn and her daughter, Chloe Almeda. Their pieces, which include tiles, plates, bowls, and vases, are hand built and decorated in intricate designs, using wax resist and a wide variety of glazes.
For over 25-years, Cory has been experimenting with clay and glazes, making bowls, vases, and tiles, and decorating them with designs inspired by the colors, shapes, plants, and creatures found in the natural world.
From a young age, Chloe watched as Cory hand built and decorated her pieces with scenes of vibrant nasturtiums, inquisitive owls, chatty birds on small branches, textured leaves and flowers, and very cheery dancing mice.
When she was about 10-years-old, Chloe began to ask more questions, and experiment with clay on her own, until slowly, over many years, she too fell in love with the process of building and designing and creating pottery.

Barbara DiPrete Waterbury and Kathryn (Kitty) Perkins first met on the playground of Burton Elementary. They worked together the summer of 1968, weeding at The Burton Pansy Gardens, a small island nursery, where they developed a passion for flowers and gardening. They remained friends over the years, and when Kathryn moved back to the island they began knitting together. This led to collaborating on designing and knitting hats and accessories.
Their passion for fibers, color and adventurous, elegant headwear culminated in ‘Vashon Island Hats and Finery.’ Kathryn and Barbara both draw their inspiration from the beaches, forests and gardens of Vashon Island. They primarily source yarns that follow the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS), or recycled, repurposed fibers, at times sourcing directly from the ranch/mill.
Especially of interest to both Kathryn and Barbara is the design aspect of creating; each bringing their own vision to the finished hat, cowl or capelet, often accentuated with found objects such as antique brooches.
They believe there is a hat for every head.

Cathy Sarkowsky Studio offers a wide range of sizes and prices of vibrant paintings, prints, ceramics, scarves, cards, etc. Sarkowsky's primarily nonrepresentational work is known for truly masterful use of color and composition.
Her hand built stoneware ceramics are funky, colorful and useful. Scarves are printed from high quality digital images of her paintings and sell out quickly. She even has a few fabulous tote bags and zipper bags.
Sarkowsky is inspired by the natural and built world around her, which shows up in her use of subject matter, color, texture and pattern. Sarkowsky has shown her art work for over 30 years and currently shows at Seattle Art Museum Gallery and Vashon Center for the Arts. One of her paintings can currently be seen at The Tacoma Art Museum.

My new studio is the old Burton Post Office, where I'm creating leather-based sculpture and assemblage, as well as other leather goods based on decades working in the medium. A passion for history and the cowboy period in the American West initially drew me to the techniques and aesthetics that are the foundation of my work. My commercial designs have been used in fashion, advertising, television and film; other creations are in private collections and museums. This new body of work is a true departure for me and a real joy...no boundaries and 35 years of technique I can run with. I'm having a blast with these sculptures. VCA’s 18th Annual Miniature Show is a unique collection of over 100 pieces, all in small form. “I cast my first piece of jewelry when I was 15 years old. What can I say? I live, eat, and breathe jewelry making. The basic technique I use as a goldsmith is lost wax casting. Fabrication, when needed, is done afterward. The goal of my designs is to be fluid rather than sharp edged. To be water rather than rock.”

Renée Marceau is an artist, farmer, and seeker of patterns. By exploring and making connections between seemingly unconnected objects through shape, color, texture and pattern, she reveals the hidden threads and symbols that dwell just beneath the physical world. Her assemblages elevate these connections and strives to capture the tension between nature’s vulnerability and it’s strength while reflecting its symbolism in our lives. Like nature, we face the tenuous edge of vulnerability and impermanence. In her view, we are not separate from nature. We are nature.
Estavan Roaché began his journey with clay at age five on a sunny day as he was unknowingly initiated into his future life through the alchemy of tasting the clay earth. After completing his MFA in Ceramics at the UW, he launched his professional career of teaching, making an artistic tile line, completing multiple public art mosaic installations, and creating sculptures and pottery. The process of working with clay and being guided by dreams and imagination are what ignites Estavan’s creative spirit. His sculptural work explores dream characters and often leads to new stories and insights into his personal and the collective mythology. His interest in tracking clay from its earth origin to finished product, fuels his artistry in traditional clay processes from throwing tea bowls to making bricks.
Estavan and Renee built Roots & Dreams Studio on their property to house each of their creative endeavors and to manifest a lifelong dream of both independent and collaborative artistry.

Lee Hendrickson’s fine art photographs of crystals offer a uniquely beautiful perspective of nature. His crystalline subjects, including crystals from wine, chocolate, and caffeine, are first grown from solution by evaporation, and then photographed with a high-resolution digital imaging microscope. Stunning rainbows of color are created by the refraction of light through their crystal facets, with each pattern as delicate, transient, and individual as a snowflake.

Frog Holler Studios is a family artist collective that sits adjacent to the wetlands of the Fisher Pond Preserve, fed by natural springs on the property. In early spring, the mating calls of frogs in the neighboring wetlands send a symphonic sound through the surrounding forest. It is here that our inspiration is conceived, finding form in watercolor paintings, multi-media drawings, graphite and ink illustrations, printmaking, handbound books, and fiber-based arts. During this year’s winter VIVA tour, Frog Holler Studios presents work by Nancy and Claire Putney.
Trained as a graphic designer and calligrapher, Nancy Putney is known for her realistic, montage-style illustrations and mural art. Working primarily in watercolor, graphite, and ink, she centers her creativity around nature and what she finds in the beauty of outdoor environments, including natural landscapes, flora and fauna, and architectural structures.
Claire Putney is an interdisciplinary artist, arts educator, and craftsperson who has a background in printmaking, darkroom photography, and fiber art. With an affinity to texture and pattern, her drawings and prints gather momentum in the layering of lines and shapes from maps, charts, and diagrams. Much of Claire’s work is informed by relics, materials, and imagery that she collects from specific geographic locations to describe the histories of a place.

A native son of the Pacific Northwest, John Woodard studied under Jacob Lawrence, his most influential mentor and teacher at the University of Washington. One can see Lawrence's influence in the precise way John uses negative and positive shapes in his compositions. Woodard has been a professional artist since 1974. He has lived on the island since 1977. Vashon's beauty has inspired his work. His work reflects his intense interest in color theory.
While John works in oil and pen and ink, Woodard’s oil pastels and watercolor resists are the featured items of the studio tour. The watercolor resist technique is unique to this studio. John’s vibrant still-life work of floral, fruit and landscapes are one-of-a-kind originals available at an affordable price. We are offering framed and unframed work.
The studio is located at 11619 SW Cove Rd. It is a gray, shake shingled, one story house. Park right next to the house or on the access road, the next driveway west of the house on the hill. Look for the parking signs. Checks, Venmo or cash are accepted. Sorry, no credit cards.

Silvija Paza has been sandblasting designs in glass since 1985, from traditional geometric designs of her Latvian heritage to images from the magical natural world of Vashon Island, her home since 1979. Herons, frogs and salmon are sandblasted on to vases, bowls, beer and coffee mugs. You’ll find sandblasted Christmas ornaments with these designs – perfect gifts for the holidays! She also sandblasts glass using real leaves, ferns, cedar and hemlock to create her “Forest Shadows” pieces with delicate silhouettes of the leaves on a frosted background.
The tour is a chance to visit Silvija’s studio where she creates the work. One half of the studio is the “clean side”, where she displays her glass and works on the design to be sandblasted on the piece. You can take a look in the other half of the studio – the “dirty side”– and see the sandblasting equipment and get a better idea of how it’s done.
Glass Heart Studio is right next to the Old Colvos Store with the gas pump out front, which is her home and a King County historic landmark on the Westside Highway.
You can also find her work at the Swiftwater Gallery in lovely downtown Vashon.

BrennoStudio combines the blown glass work of Brian Brenno and the ceramic work of Tara Brenno.The artists met while attending California College of Arts and Craft in 1985. In 1997 they started Brian Brenno Blown Glass on Vashon Island, Washington. In 2005 they built a glass / ceramic studio where they both could work. Since then they have exhibited together as BrennoStudio, each developing their own lines of work. Brian’s blown glass work includes his Lollipop Flowers, Garden Flowers, and his recycled glass Garden Pendants adding year round color for the home or garden. Tara’s hand-built ceramic bowls and vases include intricate, vibrant hand glazed patterns and colors. Her sgraffito style vases evoke images of nature and birds.

WabiSabi Studios is the home base for Jean and Alex Echevarria on Vashon Island. Jean creates woodcut prints in the reduction method, printing by hand rather than using a press.
She has framed and unframed prints available as well as individually printed woodcut cards. Her work generally comes from flora, fauna, or conceptual images. Alex creates concrete carved
and molded original sculptural works, some of which are also enrobed in mosaic designs. His pieces are inspired by Asian history and folk art and can enhance your home or garden space.
