Photography Salon hosted by Kent Phalen

Gather Vashon 17600 Vashon Hwy, Vashon, WA

VIVA photographers, please join us to show and discuss your photographs.  We are meeting at Gather Vashon.  The format will be akin to a portfolio review.  Each photographer will present their work and participate in a roundtable discussion.  The idea is to be able to show your work, add commentary, and get feedback from your fellow Vashon photographers.  This is NOT a competition!  This is not a juried event.  This is friends gathering to see each other’s work and offer comments, support and encouragement. All that is required is finished photographs.  Yes, real, paper photographs, those 20th Century things we all remember!  Please limit your submission to 10-12 photos max.  Be selective, bring your best.  The idea is to show your best and get feedback from fellow photographers and friends. Food and beverages are not provided, so if anyone wants to bring some that would be great.

Beginning Monoprint

Sept 21-22  beginning monoprint—no experience necessary, but experienced artists will enjoy it as well.  Use the etching press to create a one of a kind image.  Using oil based inks, create images on a plexi glass plate using brushies, stencils, stamps, natural materrials, fabric textures, and whatever you can think of.  This is a fun free form process—you will make a print by lunch time.  In this class you will also learn to use the press and understand how the studio works.  Great fun! Details:  classes run from 10:00 to 4:00.  The cost is $195 for the two days plus $25 material fees.  The fees include everything except extra paper which can be purchaced at cost. The classes are located at the Beall greenhouses at 18531 Beall Rd SW  Vashon.     I am very excited about these classes.  If you have any questions let me know  HYPERLINK "mailto:valeriewillson@comcast.net"valeriewillson@comcast.net or 206-463-5067.  All my best, Valerie

Intermediate Monoprint

Intermediate Monoprint - learning more techniques with monoprint.  Build on techniques you already know—and continue an understanding of inks and color.  We will focus on registration—printing over an image you already have to add to it and make it richer.  And we will explore viscosity—putting an oily ink down and rolling over it with a stiffer ink so the oily ink rejects the stiff ink and you get several colors side by side.  We will also explore more techniques for applying ink to a plate.  You will begin to see how the techniques can be interchanged for endless possibilities.   Details:  classes run from 10:00 to 4:00.  The cost is $195 for the two days plus $25 material fees.  The fees include everything except extra paper which can be purchaced at cost. Collograph

Oct. 26-27  collograph—making a printing plate as you would a collage.  Glue textures onto a plexiglass plate using acrylic medium.  When the plate is dry you can wipe ink into the plate and wipe it off again so it is held in the lowest parts of the plate.  When you run this through the press you get an image with beautiful rich textures.  Roll ink over the high points of the plate to create even more color and texture.  If there is enough interest it would be fun to do a class that just explored printing the collograph.  Once you have a plate you can print it many different ways. Details:  classes run from 10:00 to 4:00.  The cost is $195 for the two days plus $25 material fees.  The fees include everything except extra paper which can be purchaced at cost. The classes are located at the Beall greenhouses at 18531 Beall Rd SW  Vashon.  If you have any questions let me know  "mailto:valeriewillson@comcast.net"valeriewillson@comcast.net or 206-463-5067.
